MNC Cross Country – 12 May 2013 – Morgans Road

MNC CROSS COUNTRY, MORGANS ROAD, SANDY BEACH, SUNDAY 12 MAY 2013.

It was Mothers Day and the 5kms loop at the Coffs City farm on Morgans Road proved to be one ‘mother’ of a course. Despite an understandable desire from some to have a sleep-in, Sunday’s edition of the Mid North Coast Cross Country Series still attracted over 140 runners to tackle the three distances on offer.

Karlie Swanson gave the female 5kms runners a break as she scooted through a runaway win in the 2kms crossing the line 17 seconds ahead of the winning male, Casey O’Brien.  Jonny Gusman showed that he is running into form at the right time for his school cross country commitments by crossing as third person, narrowly ahead of Benjamin Burridge. Second female was Chloe Bulloch with Gabby Sullivan third in that category.

The 2kms was something of a walk in the park compared to what awaited those lining up for the 5 and 10kms. However Jordan Gusman, Luke Tarrant, Marcus O’Brien and Terry Garrett, all showed that the course could be tamed with sub20 minutes clockings. Kembla Joggers visitor Shayla Szackas showed that the South Coast also breeds some tough competitors by taking out the female 5kms from Melissa Bulloch, who is on the comeback trail from injury, and Isabel Garrett.

If one lap of the course was tough it took a particularly keen competitor to go around again. Leading the way was Brett Hoffman, followed in by Tony Woolford and, with his first podium, Rodney Koopmans.

Shannon O’Hara led in the ladies with Kylie Marle and Trish Moffatt filling the minors.

Next week sees the Series shift south to Nambucca for a beach and bush combination starting at 9.30am with registrations being taken in the park off Swimming Creek Road.
