MNC Cross Country – 5 July 2015 – Diggers Beach

The Gusman brothers, Jordan & Jonny, backed up with wins in the Mid North Coast Cross Country races at Diggers Beach after their annual foray to the Gold Coast had seen both produce personal bests. Jordan finished third in the Gold Coast 10 kms with 29.59, an improvement of almost two minutes on his run on the same course last year. He then cruised around the testing 8.7 kms Diggers Beach course in 36.01 leading in the field by well over 5 minutes.

Jonny Gusman settled for a win in the Diggers 2kms after carving two minutes from his 5.7kms time on the Gold Coast. Behind Gusman in the 2kms there was a mad dash to the line with Mitchell Karasch prevailing by one second over Tom Neal. For the females Jess Deans was the stand-out with comfortable wins in the 2kms and 4.4kms. In the 2kms she was followed in by Olissa Onley who just out-stayed Elke Bowles. In the 4..4 kms Madyson Cowling was runner-up with Michelle Versluys filling third spot.

The male 4.4 kms saw another sprint to the line with Paul Gromadzki prevailing in 18.39 to Sam Burke’s 18.41. Neil Griffen rounded out the podium in 19.19.

Runner-up in the male 8.7 kms went to Nigel Cotsell with a two minute margin over third-placed Michael Dougherty. The ladies saw the ‘usual suspects’ fill the placings with Tina Thompson leading in Tracy Austin and Wendy Lord-Smith.

FOOTNOTE  – While the Gusman clan made it back to Diggers on Sunday several other local runners distinguished themselves on the Gold Coast. Amongst them were Karlie Swanson who won her age division and broke through for a sub-37 minutes time, Luke Tarrant who ran strongly to go under 35 minutes and Chloe Bulloch who came 4th in her age for the 5.7 kms. Of special note was the sub-3 hours run in the Marathon by Leah Fitzgerald, an effort which gave her third in the very competitive 30-34 age division.
