There was quite a close tussle for victory in the ladies’ section of the Forest Footrace between Karlie Swanson and Leah Fitzgerald while Isaiah Koopmans showed a very clean pair of heels to the rest of the men in a break-through performance over the 11.2kms.
Emerging from the forest section of the Footrace Fitzgerald trailed Swanson by a metre but the Australian Junior Cross Country representative was able to pull away for the win. The times for both ladies would have won most of the other 33 editions of the Footrace.
Only Narelle McKean’s and Courtney McLennan’s times in 1983 and 2002, respectively, were faster than Swanson’s on Saturday.
With Swanson and Fitzgerald crossing the finish in 2nd and 3rd outright, it was left to Ed Brazier to collect the second spot for the men 13 seconds ahead of Phil Butler. Jess Dougherty ran faster than her winning time last year to place third in the ladies’ race this time.
Koopmans and Swanson both backed up to run the Seaside Scamper on Sunday with Swanson collecting the double and Koopmans filling the runner-up spot to a much fresher, Sam Burke. Burke’s time of 18.06 rates as the fastest since the new course was instigated in 2013.
Swanson also lowered her own record for the 5kms by 35 seconds.
Third man to finish the Scamper was Scott Mitchell while the minor places on the women’s podium went to Jess Deans and Chloe Bulloch.
However perhaps the standout performance was by 7 year old Daniel Williams who was the second Under 12 boy, recording an amazing time of 22.03.
The Beach Bash saw clear first past the post triumphs for Harrison Colyer and Olissa Onley. However the category age group winners for the 2 kms were Max Iggulden and Zoe Wilson in the Under 10s and Raphael Wirth and Allira Wynn in the Under 8s.
The Family of Four team winner was the Williams family from Hyland Park. Heather & Tim Kitching took out the Husband & Wife category with Garry & Nick Murray prevailing in the Parent and Child section. First Ladies’team was made up of Tina Thompson, Anthea Martin and Tracy Austin while Woolgoolga High was the winning Secondary School.
