It was on for young and old in the second round of the Mid North Coast Cross Country Running Series on Sunday around the Coffs Creek walkway with youngsters Tim Martin and Gabby Sullivan leading in the 2 kms event and Paul Woodhouse giving a “Master” class in the 10kms.
In the 2kms Ben Burridge and Jacob Thorn filled the minor placings for the males only a handful of steps behind the winner while Tara Everson only conceded 5 seconds to Gabby Sullivan with Elke Bowles keeping both of them honest. With 91 runnerrs the 2kms looks to be a very competitive distance for the rest of the season.
The 5kms was an Isaiah Koopmans , Karlie Swanson “benefit” with both recording commanding victories by 1 min 37 secs and 1 min 47 secs respectively. Mitchell Karrasch and James Moncada filled second and third for the males, both ducking under 20 minutes to do so. In the ladies it was the familiar figure of Jess Deans in second and the return of Heather Kitching in third.
Paul Woodhouse showed that he can race on the flat as well as the mountains with a massive 3 min 30 secs victory in the 10 kms. First lady, Kate Heyward, and second male, Dave Cross were both debuting in Series and can be well pleased with their initial hit-outs. Third spot for the men went to Nick Murray while second and third in the women went to Tina Thompson and Eszter Hortobagyi respectively.
Of special note was the effort of the diminutive Daniel Williams who set out to run 5kms, overshot the turn-around point and went on to run the full 10kms.
The 10kms also served as the second round of the Partland/McKean 10,000 metres Series with Woodhouse helping himself to a very healthy 17 points to lead Cross (16), Murray (15) and Rodney Koopmans & Ed Brazier on 14. Heyward picked up 6 points to set up an interesting tussle with Thompson on 8 and Hortobagyi on 5. The final round of the Partland/McKean Series will be held on the roads of Heritage Park on 14th June.
With over 150 runners across the three distances the cross country season seems to be gathering momentum.
Next week’s events will take place at Woolgoolga, starting and finishing at the Woolgoolga Lakeside picnic area. Runners are asked to report by 8.30am for the 9.00am start of the 2kms.
