NORTH COAST ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS – CORINDI 2014

While the organisers from Woolgoolga Athletic Club may have been a little disappointed with the size of the fields in this year’s North Coast Road Running Championships held at Corindi on Sunday they were pleased to see some superb performances from those who did contest the events. Also they were more than happy that the host club was able to claim six of the age group titles on offer. Coffs Coast Little Athletics also claimed six titles as well with only two, to UTSAC and Kembla Joggers A.C. being claimed by runners representing clubs outside the Coffs Harbour City area. The runner representing UTS was one of Corindi’s most famous residents, Jordan Gusman, whose dominance of the 15kms event was totally convincing. After being kept company early in the run by Matthew Berrington, Gusman kicked hard over the final five kilometres to win by almost three minutes. Berrington had no trouble finishing as a clear runner-up some five and a half minutes ahead of Ed Brazier who was able to build on his recent Macleay Marathon experience to claim third. Tina Thompson from Emerald Beach showed that her preparation for the Outback Marathon is well and truly on track with a victory margin of almost five minutes over Fiona Ensby and Tracy Austin who were a mere eleven seconds apart in second and third.

The 5kms saw Karlie Swanson cruise to victory after a lightning first four kilometres while the Under 14 age group Champ Jess Deans not only claimed that title but backed up to win the Under 12 2 kms Championship minutes later. The male 5kms was led in by Marcus O’Brien in 17.25 but the two younger runners who finished next , Isaiah Koopmans and Ben Burridge were equally impressive as they claimed the Under 16 and Under 14 titles respectively. Apart from Deans dominance in the Under 12 age division impressive 2kms championship wins went to Casey O’Brien (Under 12 Boys) and Elke Bowles (Under 10 Girls). Others to claim Championships on the day were Tim Martin (Under 18 5kms), Peter Mitchell (35-39 15kms), Nigel Cotsell (45-49 15kms), Jenni Williams (55-59 15kms), Gordon Abbott (65-69 15kms) and the tireless Tom Holbut (75-79 15kms). Amongst a number of other “Lucky Draw” prizes were four free entries to the Coffs Harbour Running Festival to be held in September. These were won by Craig Wirth and Jenni Williams in the 15kms and Jack Howe and Charlie Lee in the 5 kms.

While many local runners will be chasing glory on the Gold Coast next weekend the Mid North Coast Cross Country Series will continue with the next races to be held for those staying close to home at Sandy Beach starting with the 2 kms from the Reserve opposite the shop at 9.00am.
