MID NORTH COAST CROSS COUNTRY – DIGGERS BEACH Sunday 28 April 2013.

The biggest field thus far faced the starter for the 2kms this Sunday at Diggers Beach in the third round of the Mid North Coast Cross Country running series. Casey O’Brien showed strength as well as speed in finishing first on what most believe is the toughest 2kms of the series. He was followed home in short order by Chris and Jacob Thorn. The girls race was only decided in the sprint to the line with Charlotte Williams outkicking Jacinta Smithers by 5 seconds. Maddie Sadler led in the rest of the ladies to claim third spot. In all 127 runners of all ages completed the 2kms.

Smaller fields gathered for the double headland whammy encompassed by the 5 and 10 kms events. Although both events were somewhat short of full distance the steep climbing involved meant there were no demands to add more metres. Luke Tarrant again prevailed narrowly over Marcus O’Brien in the one lap, 4.4kms, with both enjoying a greater margin back to Jacob Wilson in third. Karlie Swanson once again demonstrated why she represents NSW as a distance runner, leading in the ladies by over two minutes. Tenielle Stubbs and Joanne Ferguson filled the minors.

If the 4.4kms was tough those tackling two laps of the course really had to work. However Reece Edwards and Dorrigo’s Paul Woodhouse seemed to relish the degree of difficulty finishing the event in the impressive times of 34.40 and 34.58 respectively. Bruce Meder was comfortably clear of the rest of the field in third.

Michelle Pearson and Kylie Marle were also impressive in finishing 1 & 2 for the ladies in 44.11 and 44.36. Tina Thompson showed no real ill-effects from last weekend’s Red Rock to Coffs Jetty to claim third.

Worthy of special mention were the efforts of two of the more senior competitors, Tom Holbut and Gordon Abbott, who both backed up to run the two laps after marking the course earlier in the morning.

The next races in the series will be at Sawtell with registration near the Surf Club. The 2kms will get underway at 9.00am, followed by the 5 and 10kms.

MID NORTH COAST CROSS COUNTRY PRESENTATION DAY RELAY 25.8.13

The final day of this winter’s Mid North Coast Cross Country saw some stellar performances from a range of age divisions as relay teams battled it out on the four-wheel drive trail at Bongil Bongil on Sunday. Jordan Gusman and Karlie Swanson, both off to National Cross Country Championships next weekend, showed that their speed will be equal to the task with times of 5.52 and 7.15 for the 2kms course.

However it was not one of their teams which triumphed on the day. Some great running from Harrison Colyer, Joel Garrett, Summer Williams, Terry Garrett, Andrew Martin, Lochie Marle and Melissa Bulloch prevailed by 26 seconds over Max Neal, Mandy Williams, Tony Woolford, Jayden Wood, Kylie Marle, Luke Mallia and Jacob Thorn.

Third spot was claimed by a team comprising Jonny Gusman, Johanna Kuchel, Morgan Schley, Steel Beveridge, Tracey Austin, Niki Gusman and Rodney Koopmans.

Other fast times were recorded by Luke Tarrant (6.25), Isaiah Koopmans (7.19) and Tony Woolford (7.22) for the blokes while for the ladies it was the daughter/mother combination, Chloe (7.51) and Melissa(8.16) Bulloch.

The medal presentation for the season followed the relay as the runners and supporters enjoyed a sausage sizzle.

MNC Cross Country – King and Queen of Mt Coramba, Sunday 28 July 2013.

Jordan Gusman showed that he can handle any terrain with a convincing victory in this year’s King of the Mountain event on the slopes of Mount Coramba on Sunday. Gusman charged up the mountain to have a three minute buffer over defending title-holder, Jason Smit. He then made sure of the win by posting the fastest descent as well.

Grace Edwards claimed the Queen title in a similar fashion, leading by a minute at the top and adding another minute to her victory margin on the downhill. However she was more than kept honest by Kylie Marle while former Queen, Tina Thompson, also made sure there was no slacking off.

Both Marle and Smit were clearly the runners-up on the day while third-placed Scott Pearson could be well pleased with a sub-50 minutes effort in what ranks as the toughest test in the Mid North Coast Cross Country Series.

It was a case of familiar faces to the fore in the shorter races with Karlie Swanson and Luke Tarrant clear winners in the 4 kms and Jonny Gusman and Jess Deans prevailing in the 2kms.

In the 4kms Nick Murray and the unstoppable Rodney Koopmans (who ran all three races) filled the minors in the 4kms for the males while Tenielle Stubbs and Jess Deans did likewise for the females.

Benjamin Burridge and Isaiah Koopmans were second and third in the male 2kms with Fiona Martin and Olissa Onley rounding out the podium for the females.

With Mt Coramba behind them the runners will swing north to the beaches and headlands of the Mullawarra course next week with the more regular start time of 9.00am for the 2kms followed by the common start of the 5 & 10 kms.

Nambucca served up sparkling winter weather as those who had competed in the NSW All-Schools Cross Country on Friday used the runs to shake out the left-over fatigue on the beach and bush courses.

The 2kms was all beach but blessed with firm sand underfoot the young runners made the most of the fast conditions with the top three dipping under 8 minutes. Tim Martin was the first male, seven seconds ahead of the first female the ever-consistent Charlotte Williams. Third to finish was eight year old ‘wunderkind’ Harrison Colyer. In third for the males Luke Mallia was only one second shy of eight minutes with Chloe Bulloch, in second for the females, only three seconds further back. Third female was another consistent performer, Gabby Sullivan.

The 5kms saw the male place-getters spread across three minutes seventeen seconds with Luke Tarrant backing up from a strong All-schools performance to take line honours ahead of Isaiah Koopmans and 2kms winner, Tim Martin.

McKean Family Series winner, Kylie Marle, was the first female in the 5kms as newly crowned NSW All-Schools Champion, Karlie Swanson, cruised into second 17 seconds ahead of newcomer, Olivia Langley.

Rodney Koopmans went one better than No.1 son, Isaiah, by winning the 10kms quite comfortably from Alex Harken with Jon Murray crossing as third male. The winning woman was Emily Bourke who was third outright, ahead of Tina Thompson who was fourth outright. Fiona Bagley coped with a troublesome knee, managing it well enough to come in as third lady.

Next week is a special race in the Series with the King and Queen of Mount Coramba taking place. The main event, the 9.5 kms up and down the mountain, will get underway at 8.00am followed by the 4kms and then the 2kms supporting events. All three runs count in the pointscore as per normal.

With quite a few runners opting for the glitz and glamour of a run on the Gold Coast over the flat and fast Marathon festival courses it was left to the hardy true believers to take to the tougher terrain of the Mid North Coast cross country courses at Diggers Beach.

There was a mix of ‘old’ and ‘new’ names on the winners list with the familiar names of Tim Martin and Jess Deans taking out the 2kms and the new names of Kieren Bellemore in the 5kms and Emily Bourke in the 10kms being added to the honour roll. Jacinta Smithers in the 5kms gained another win for her c.v. while consistent performer Craig Wirth broke through for a maiden victory in the 10kms.

Ben Burridge pushed Martin to the line as runner-up in the 2kms with Cameron Burns only 5 seconds back in third. Gabby Sullivan and Danielle McMahon filled the minors for the girls in the 2kms while Charlotte Williams and Jess Deans did likewise in the 5kms.
Kyle McGrorey ducked under 20 minutes as runner-up in the 5kms while Tom Neal held off Ky Sullivan to take third spot.

Nathan Quinn and Dominic Gough filled the placings in the male 10kms while Tracey Austin was again on the podium as runner-up for the women.

The next races in the Series will be at Heritage Park, Moonee. A different timetable will apply with the 10kms, which is the final leg of the Warren Partland and McKean Family Series, starting first at 8.00am. The 5kms and 2kms will follow separately at 9.20am and 10.00am approximately.

MNC Cross Country Road races Heritage Park Sunday 14 July 2013.

Jordan Gusman made sure that this year’s Warren Partland Series finished with a bang as he took to the roads of Heritage Park with a vengeance on Sunday. Gusman had won the 5.7kms on the Gold Coast the week before but no-one expected him to charge around the 10kms on Sunday in the startling time of 32.46, surely one of the fastest 10kms times ever on the Coffs Coast. Fortunately for those involved with the three race Partland Series it was his only run in that series so the point scores from the other races gave the major placings to runners who had competed in the earlier events at Woolgoolga and the Botanic Gardens.

Thus the Series winner for 2013 is Jason Smit who had contested all three events finishing with a strong third place on Sunday in 40.01. Runner-up in the Series and just ahead of Smit on Sunday was Brett Hoffman. Third in the Series was Rodney Koopmans, fresh from his marathon debut on the Gold Coast.

The McKean Family Series for women saw something of an ‘arm-wrestle’ between Kylie Marle and previous winner, Tina Thompson, with both starting Sunday race equal on 7 points. Marle’s 43.46 proved too good on the day giving her Series victory by one point as Thompson secured the runner-up spot on the Series and the day. Third in the McKean Series was a tie between Janie Mahoney and Fiona Bryant-Smith who finished fourth and fifth behind third-placed Chrissie Le Feaux in Sunday’s run.

The other events run on the much flatter sections of the Heritage Park estate provided some quick times as well with Casey O’Brien, another runner fresh from a Gold Coast win, taking out the 2kms four seconds ahead of Ben Burridge with Casey’s Dad, Marcus cruising in for third. Charlotte Williams continued her pre-eminence in the 2kms with a slick 7.38 keeping Jacinta Smithers and Chloe Bulloch at bay.

Luke Tarrant charged home in 17.39 after a conservative start to take out the 5kms ahead of Matthew Berrington and Beau Tape with all three runners under 19 minutes.

Yet another Gold Coast winner, Karlie Swanson, made short work of the female 5kms recording 19.25 to Alina Tape’s 20.52 and Isabel Garrett’s 23.09.

Next week the Mid North Coast series swings south and takes to the sand and bush of the Nambucca course with the 2kms leading off at 9.30am, followed by the usual 5 & 10 kms common start.

RESULTS: 2KMS – (Male) – Casey O’Brien 7:17, 1; Benjamin Burridge 7:21, 2; Marcus O’Brien 7:23, 3; Cameron Burns 7:36, 4; Luke Thorn 7:45, 5; Tom Neal 7:52, 6; Harrison Colyer 7:53, 7; Tim Martin 8:18, 8; Tom Ylinen 8:24, 9; Luke Mallia 8:31, 10; Elijah Thorn 8:35, 11; Thomas Sweeney 8:41, 12; Michael Ylinen 8:42, 13; Patrick Sweeney 8:44, 14; Aydin Yumru 8:46, 15; Jayden Wood 9:01, 16; Alex Newman 9:07, 17; Kyle Wood 9:09, 18; Morgan Schley 9:18, 19; Tony Nolan 9:19, 20; Lochie Marle 9:30, 21; Kaden Nolan 9:44, 22; Nicholas Sweeney 10:02, 23; Daniel Williams 10:10, 24; Keith Williams 10:12, 25; Max Neal 10:26, 26; Joel Garrett 10:34, 27; Sam Wilson 10:46, 28; Andrew Martin 10:52, 29; Sheldon Koopmans 10:55, 30; Rodney Koopmans 10:56, 31; Thomas Burridge 11:09, 32; Lucas Burridge 11:30, 33; Michael Burridge 11:31, 34; Sonny Colyer 12:05, 35; Paul Harrison 12:35, 36.

There was some very fast running across the distances when the Mid North Coast Cross Country Series went bush in the Overhead Bridge Road area of the Bongil Bongil National Park on Sunday.
Firstly Jacob Wilson turned up to race the 2kms in fine style, clocking 6.42 on the flat forest trails. This was followed by Jordan Gusman’s exceptional 16.12 time for the 5kms which saw the field in that event respond to his pace-setting by clocking a series of personal best efforts. In all, five males and the leading lady, Karlie Swanson, all ran under 20 minutes for the out-and-back course.

Jonny Gusman just outkicked the dynamic Casey O’Brien 7.25 to 7.28 to take the runner-up spot for the 2kms. Tenielle Stubbs showed that she is running into form as she claimed first in the 2kms and second in the 5kms for the females. Youngsters just back from the State Catholic Schools Championships , Chloe Bulloch and Jess Deans , who won her age at Eastern Creek, filled second and third for the female 2kms.

Marcus O’Brien ran exceptionally well to take second in the 5kms in 17.33 but it was especially pleasing to see the return to running after illness of Luke Tarrant who also broke 18 minutes to finish third. Third female in the 5kms was Charlotte Williams who had earlier used the 2kms , usually a happy hunting ground for her, as something of a warm-up.

The 10kms male placings were closely contested with Bruce Meder winning in the run home on the second lap by 10 seconds from early leader Brett Hoffman, with Andrew Hart a mere 19 seconds back in third. Hoffman and Hart could be forgiven for not having as much zing in their legs as usual after finishing first with a 21 hour plus effort in the recent Geoquest multidiscipline team event .

Melissa Bulloch’s legs did have plenty of zing as she ran away from the rest of the ladies in the 10kms. Second lady, Janie Mahoney, was fresh enough at the finish to log a further 5 kms to pick up the course markings while Tracey Austin made it two podiums from two starts in the 10kms event with her third place finish.

The Series takes a break for the next two weeks as runners hit the roads; firstly for the North Coast Road Running Championships at Corindi over 15kms, 5 kms and 2kms and then the following week over the more familiar distances of 10, 5 and 2.5 kms for the Valley Challenge Fun Runs in the Boambee area.
